Orientation 2019 (Thunderwolves Howl: Ignite your Adventure) takes place from August 29-31. International students who are attending the Thunder Bay campus have one additional, mandatory orientation day on August 28. International students who are attending the Orillia campus have a mandatory orientation session on August 29.
We’re so glad you asked! There are many reasons to attend Orientation. Here are five:
Wolfie (our mascot!) also has something to say about this! Be sure to check out Issue 3 of Wolfie’s Weekly Adventures to hear from him.
We’ve planned a variety of activities that will allow you to break the ice with your fellow classmates, get to know your future besties, ease your transition to University and make many, many memories. We’ll be releasing specific details over the month of August to be sure to stay tuned to newadventure.lakeheadu.ca and check your email to read Wolfie’s Weekly Adventures.
You will receive a confirmation email from us to the email address you used to register. (Hint: this is a great opportunity to use your Lakehead email address as we’ll be using this email to communicate with you all year long). If you didn’t receive your confirmation email a few minutes after registering (sometimes the aliens are slow), please reach out to us!

We strongly encourage all our new Thunderwolves to attend as many of the orientation activities and events as possible. They are designed for new students to meet one another, gain valuable information regarding university, navigate campus and get familiar with student services. We recognize that not all the events may appeal to everyone, but we still encourage all Thunderwolves to come out and check them out.
While most of the events are geared towards our new Thunderwolves, there are a few that involve family and friends. Check out the schedules at each campus so you know who is expected to attend which events. If the schedule includes family and friends, then they are invited to join along. If the schedule indicates the event is for students only, then our new Thunderwolves will be the only ones permitted to attend. For example, there is a Family & Friends Session on Thursday, August 29 on the Thunder Bay campus at 3:00 pm which we hope to see all parents, families, friends, and supporters attend.
Orillia: In front of Simcoe Hall.
Thunder Bay: In the Agora.
Watch for the signs and the helpful Orientation Leaders!
Orillia: Move-in day takes place on Thursday August 29th. You will receive an email indicating when move-in day is and at what time you should arrive. Please have a look at your Lakehead email. If you haven’t received anything please connect with residence at 1-705-330-4009.
Thunder Bay: Move-in day takes place on Thursday August 29th beginning at 9:00am. Follow the signs! Early arrivals will only be permitted with the authorization of the Residence Administration Office. Click here for more information.
If you show up early you can hang out on campus until things get going. You can also explore your new community! There are many things to do in Orillia and Thunder Bay. If you are living in residence, this would be a good time to organize your belongings in your room; however, you do need to pre-arrange an early move-in date with Residence in advance.
If you are late, don’t worry! Find someone in a tye dyed Orientation shirt in Orillia or a blue Orientation shirt in Thunder Bay and we will get you registered so you can join in right away.
During the first six weeks of school there are many opportunities for you to meet new people and check out different activities on campus. If you would like a hand, connect with Student Central in Orillia or the Student Success Centre in Thunder Bay to make an appointment with a Student Success Advisor to get you started.
There are many people on campus during orientation week to assist with any questions or concerns you might have. This includes campus staff, Orientation Leaders, other students, faculty and all of us in the Student Success Centre. In addition to that, we have Security services on campus 24/7 in case of emergency. Trust us — we’ve been waiting for you so we’re happy to help!
